88 FINGERS LOUIE – ‘Thank You For Being A Friend’ Review

88 FINGERS LOUIE – Thank You For Being A Friend

88-fingers-louie88 Fingers Louie are back with their first album in 19 years, entitled Thank You For Being a Friend. The Chicago-based punks have teamed up with Florida’s Bird Attack Records to release the new album, set for a June 30th 2017 release. 88 Fingers Louie (named after a shady piano salesman from the Flintstones cartoon) got their official start in 1993, where they quickly started writing, playing shows and released three 7” records during their first year as a band.

A lot has changed in the 19 years 88 Fingers Louie last released an album. Shortly after the release of a split EP in 1999 with Philadelphia’s Kid Dynamite, the band decided to call it quits due to differences in vision for the band’s future.

They open up after the long silence with Meds and it’s a beautiful return with melody backed some white hot pace that is followed by Advice Column maintaining the momentum as 88 Fingers Louie sound as contemporary as any band being played on Faction right now!

Knock It Off opens with a Stiff Little Fingers riff, a shout of “Hey!” and then chugs along full of power chords and pop/punk ambiance with a definite heavier edge than the likes of Green Day. The band have a post punk strain with a skate-punk flavor as exhibited on All The Right Words.

The album contains 12 tracks and the overarching sense is that absence has made the heart grow fonder as they sound more current than most new bands with the excellent Turned To Grey showcasing some terrific bass guitar and math-punk guitar/drum interaction all supporting a melodic and strong vocal…great track for sure. Here’s To That Innocence again harkens to Stiff Little Fingers with a strong spine provided by the drums and bass allowing the guitar to lay down lick after lick propelling the song along.

88 Fingers Louie are tight and professional in their approach and the album is well produced with a clean sound on every song. Catastrophe Awaits hits with a runaway guitar lick that Olga would be proud of and then the track explodes with a super heavy riff and fast paced punk rock beauty…one of my favorites on the album. The heavy bass intro to The Violence Of Denial sets up a super hook driven track that has a Pennywise vibe and this is expanded upon on 2810 where the pace increases and the action just a tad hotter!

The band maintain the hooks, melodies and the power chords on Our Tired Vices and on November’s Big Mistake, a chunky guitar is supported by some tight yet, manically paced drumming. The album concludes with that booming bass guitar intro and a Bad Religion style track that makes My Final Story a fitting end to a super comeback.

Thank You For Being A Friend will be released through Bird Attack Records on Friday June 30th 2017 on 12″ vinyl, CD and digital download. Get it here – http://www.birdattackradio.com/
