ACTION TIME VISION – ‘Punk Box Set’

ACTION TIME VISION – ‘A Story of Independent UK Punk 1976-79’

action-time-visionThere have been many punk compilations over the years, too often ‘cashing in’ on the whole ethos of what punk is all about. However, Action Time Vision is different and it gives a real insight into the whole DIY punk movement of the late 1970’s.

Released last month in conjunction with the 40 years of punk this is an impressive box set of four CD’s excellently presented in a A5 size booklet format containing an informative description of each and every track available.

Consisting of 111 tracks of independent punk which thrived outside of the major label framework there is an array of punk bands from the famous to not so famous but all with their own unique right to appear in such a compilation.

Action Time Vision kicks off with New Rose by The Damned and then takes us through a whole myriad of different sounds and dare I say, ability. However, who cares if it’s a three chord thrash or a band who have quite rightly lasted the test of time and still tour to this very day. Punk rock in it’s true form.

There are some gems amongst the vast number of songs and some facts that surprised us at Punk Online. For example, The Killjoys lead singer was none other than Kevin Rowland, later forming Dexys Midnight Runners or Johnny and the Self Abusers who amazingly transpired into Simple Minds. Riff Raff lead singer was Billy Bragg and we know what happened to him whilst Shane McGowan of The Pogues once fronted the brilliantly named Nipple Erectors.

As I made my way through the four CD’s I was interested to hear a couple of originals that were later covered by more illustrious punk outfits. Mucky Pup by Puncture which of course made The Exploited’s massive album Punks Not Dead and a brilliant version by The Members called Solitary Confinement which was later renamed by Newtown Neurotics to Living With Unemployment.

Action Time Vision is perfectly laid out so the lesser tracks don’t bog you down and are interspersed with some classic punk anthems. Sham 69, UK Subs, Chelsea, Newtown Neurotics, Cockney Rejects, Angelic Upstarts, The Ruts to name but a few as well as one of my favourite ever songs, Suspect Device by Stiff Little Fingers. You could play this on loop and never get bored with it.

Available from Cherry Red Records here>> we strongly recommend picking up a copy of this. It’s nostalgic, it’s DIY and it’s punk rock at its rawest. This is what got me hooked 40 years ago and still left craving for more today.
