If Black Flag (Henry Rollins era) could produce a child with Discharge, that offspring would sound like Backfire! Hailing from what they refer to as “M-Town” (Maastrict, The Netherlands to the rest of us), Backfire! Have been producing hardcore punk music for 20 years or so. This latest release is intense, unyielding and about as ‘in your face’ as music can be.

Opening with ‘I’ll do it anyway’ a powerful song that changes pace behind some insistent vocals. The band is tight and the production strong throughout the seven song mini album.

‘Give it Back’ channels Black Sabbath/Rollins Band with some superb vocals (two vocalists) and a guttural chorus repeating the song title – it’s a heavy-duty effort and will be a crowd pleaser when played live. ‘Lighten the Burden’ significantly increases the pace and is fast, furious before slowing to a spoken section that then builds to a climax. ‘Money Talks’ is two minutes and seventeen seconds of pure rage.

The stand out track of the seven is the title track, ‘Where we Belong’ – it’s one of strongest punk songs we have heard this year and will become a live classic (see video below) – an anthem chorus belted out by the band has the listener wishing that there were more than seven songs to listen to. Backfire! are on fire – if you like your music fast, heavy, hardcore and full of anger then this is a must add to your listening.
