BLAG, STEAL & BORROW by Gary Raymond

Blag Steal BorrowBLAG, STEAL AND BORROW by GARY RAYMOND

The Great Old Rock ‘n’ Roll Swindle? Is exactly that…old!

But it happened again….

GARY RAYMOND’S PERSONAL JOURNEY THROUGH THE UK MUSIC INDUSTRY, FROM SWEATY ROCK CLUBS, TO THE MAIN STAGE OF THE ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL.

Maverick music manager Gary Raymond grew up in a zoo, managed to avoid kidnap, and played football in Scandinavia, as well as selling sticky tape, and running a cleaning company.  Plenty to be getting on with you’d say, but not enough for Essex’s version of Malcolm McLaren.  Not even close……….

Music had always been a love, and so music management was next. And how……follow him as he tells probably for the first time ever, the real truth, the whole truth of how to hoodwink the national media, the entire industry, and everybody else watching or listening, as local unsigned band Koopa make chart history, the Guinness book of records, win awards, and appear from nowhere to crash into the top 20……

You will read about simcards by the thousand, playing for the Russian Mafia, fighting with number 1 bands at a world famous festival, trying to buy drugs from the FBI, gold discs, sharing a bed with a famous darts player, persuading an American label to sign the band without seeing them play, and literally dozens more stories similar……

Not content with that, the book goes on to explain how the major Saturday night entertainment tv shows are not quite what they might seem….

This is a serious, funny, sad, shocking but true story of the music business, from top to bottom. If you have any interest in culture, media, arts, and entertainment you need to read this book.

This is, and was, Blag Steal & Borrow.

Gary Raymond was born in 1960 in West Ham, East London the son of a professional drummer and publican but spent his teenage years living in ‘The Cockney Del Sol’ seaside town of Southend-On-Sea awarding him the nickname ‘The Seaside cockney.

Having made his way through many jobs included running a cleaning company, importing and selling adult dvd’s and selling rolls of sticky tape, it wasn’t until he started work in the music industry that he really made his mark. With no financial backing he took 3 unsigned lads from Essex into the top 20, making music chart history, winning a Gold Disc and having them forever immortalised in The Guinness Book of Records.

He subsequently went on to have more success with the band ‘Twenty Twenty’ and his discovery of ‘The Loveable Rogues;’ playing in a field propelled them to become finalists in ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ before signing to Simon Cowells label ‘Syco’.

Until his recent retirement he had also managed unsigned band ‘Room 94’ having two top 40 chart albums without any label, PR campaign or financial support.

Achievements include:

  • 7 albums in the Official Top 40 (including a number one),
  • 7 singles in the Official Top 75 (Including 4 top 40’s)
  • 10 singles in the rock and indie charts.
  • Number 3 in the Official DVD Chart ‘Get Down with TT – Live in London’
  • TT Track featured on the box office hit movie ‘Horrid Henry.’
  • Consulted to releases by acclaimed artists Judy Dyble & Robert Fripp.

Gary makes for a very entertaining media guest. He loves talking but also knows how to listen, hes passionate, enthusiastic, authentic and he tells great stories. We are happy to consider any radio or tv appearance’s…

“Watch every word that comes out of your mouth! You can’t unring a bell.” G. Raymond
