DEATHSEX BLOODBATH – ‘Golden Showers’ Review

DEATHSEX BLOODBATH - Golden ShowersDeathsex Bloodbath are a glam-punk sleaze-rock band from Coventry who make no apologies for being who they are.

Deathsex are in a reality of their own and if you allow yourself to let go of your senses, it’s quite endearing. They are as absurd as they are amusing, but then you’d know that just by looking at the names of the band members: Justin Appropriate, Caitred Alabaster, Sadogasm, Masokiss, Sororicide and Kyly Sexualised.

Perversely Artsy but very straightforward, their lyrics are hardly novel but the delivery – both from lead singer Sadogasm and his backing vocalists – give the songs an amusing and eminently danceable air.

First track ‘Douches (There Are Too Many Of Them)’ is a well-crafted, riff-heavy track with that comes in at under two minutes and has a quite anthemic chorus, rallying against the inconsequential douches of the world.

The solid opener is followed by two songs that struggle; the high vocal chorus in ‘Lovecraftian Monster’ is difficult to listen to, which is a shame because the song overall is pretty good. ‘Text Sex By Auto-Correct’ is just one of those songs that is difficult to remember as soon as it finishes but the conversational lyrics about some kind of devious sex act leads nicely into track four.

‘Asphyxiwank’ is a slow burner with a comical, whimsical air that details an experience that hardly needs to be explained here. Some nimble guitar work and mirthful verses provide the highlight of the release as the deviant’s motives are detailed (“I’m just an ordinary bloke who likes to wank while I choke”), while the final verse runs through his inevitable funeral with his daughter proclaiming “my dad’s a wanker!”. It’s funny if you allow it to be.

Closer ‘Sellout’ is a run-of-the-mill chastising of the soul-hawkers of the music world who make music for advertisers rather than people. An easy sing-along, it showcases a band that is making the music they want to without caring one iota of anyone’s opinion.

And whether you want to be a part of their alternative dimension or not, there are some good tunes here from a band who are at least trying to be different
