THE DELINQUENTS – ‘About Last Night’ Album Review

THE DELINQUENTS – About Last Night

The DelinquentsThe Delinquents are a three-piece punk outfit with influences ranging from
Green Day to The Smiths and from The Replacements to GBH. The band have been putting on their own shows in intimate venues in their local Dundee, Scotland area to raise donations for their local food banks.

The album, About Last Night, opens with the excellently titled, Ctrl.Alt.Defeat where a radio announcer sets up a melodic punk rock riff in true UK82 style. The vocals and prominent bass guitar add to the strong beat and huge riffs – in the spirit of Demob, Rabid and other British punkers, The Delinquents have a knack of belting out a true rabble rousing rocker of a song.

On Acne the band channel some early Sham 69 and follow this up with Not Your Problem where they seriously up the pace with a raucous hardcore effort. Next up is Keep On Choking where a mellow Johnny Marr style guitar leads to a plaintive vocal as the band display some versatility.

At the half-way point we are treated to The Fuck You Song as the band introduce an acoustic guitar and vocal that deliver some strong opinions about the world. Valentines Day dials things up with a skate-punk approach that works so well placed against the previous two efforts with energy to spare. The Delinquents are the real deal and they are so endearing with personal lyrics, a sense of humour and they are comfortable being outside the mainstream as displayed on Never Gonna Fit In with melody and hooks to spare.

On Something To Prove the band dabble with a speeded up Led Zeppelin riff and some gravel throated vocals to produce a fist in the air package that just had me drooling!

The second to last song, Waste of Time marries a strong guitar lick with strong bass guitar before launching into a melodic rock and roller. This super album closes with Next Generation where the powerful beat drives the song forward to produce another nod to Sham 69/The Business and the 4-Skins…great stuff and one of the favorite albums of the Autumn so far!!
