WOOD AND NAILS – ‘The Night Before’ EP Review

wood-and-nailsFrom the city that brought you Black Sabbath and The Lost Cherrees come Wood and Nails. ‘The Night Before’ is a 6 track E.P. opening with the title song ‘The Night Before’. It’s a melodic and powerful track in the mold of Gaslight Anthem with some wonderful guitar and vocals. The band sound very accomplished and tight as if they have been together for years.

‘Crosses’ mixes bass driven verses with ‘fists punching the air’ choruses and, again, there is a hint of Bruce Springsteen with the band sounding more Birmingham, Alabama than Birmingham, England!

‘All We’ll Ever Need’ speeds things up with some terrific drumming (on evidence throughout the entire E.P.) and is a strong effort veering into EMO territory.

‘Bloodshot’ features some pretty fast and weighty bass and is a heavier track in general compared to the first three songs. It’s a strong song and is followed by two free tracks both of which are acoustic versions of ‘The Night Before’ and ‘Crosses’.

As is often the case with acoustic versions of heavier songs, they are just as powerful as the lyrics come to the fore.  My guess is that Wood and Nails will be an excellent band live as they are on record – they have a couple of gigs coming up in April: –

Saturday April 9th – New Cross Inn, London
Saturday April 16th – The Dark Horse, Moseley, Birmingham
