ABOLITIONIST – ‘The Instant’ Album Review

ABOLITIONIST – The Instant

AbolitionistPortland punks Abolitionist released their fourth LP, The Instant, last month.

Recorded in five days at Supernatural Sound Studios in Oregon City, Oregon, The Instant contains twelve tracks and opens with the truly excellent title track. The Instant has some Black Flag DNA mixed in with a little Bad Religion and Minor Threat to create a huge wall of punk rock sound full of churning guitar riffs, pacey beats (albeit with tempo changes) and excellent vocals.

The band formed in 2009 and the tracks suggest that they have settled on a tight and powerful line-up with the strong Trouble a punk rock tour de force whilst the excellently titled, A Little Animal Liberation Never Hurt Anybody is a mid-paced rocker with some Green Day and some Conflict mixed together and that’s a great combination!

Up Rising, Together maintains the momentum with significant pace matched with slower chorus sections full of menace and The Movement unleashes some punk rock power with pace, churning guitar sections and Oi! like vocals…The band do not let up the intensity with Backlash opening with group chanted vocals with the “Fuck The Keyboard Warriors” line prominent throughout!

On Never Wanted This Abolitionist change up the sound with a tick-tock rhythm and guitar licks leading to a 150mph skate-punk extravaganza replete with singalong chorus and Everything’s Great (But We’re Still Shit) is a Dead Kennedys style guitar led punk rocker that we loved here at punkonline.co.uk!

The pace is maintained with the runaway mosh-pitter, Failed Projections that matches the pacier sections with chunky segments that just, well, rock! The dirty bass guitar intro to Totally Bonkers sets up the serrated guitars and a slower pace with spoken word delivery really providing great variety.

The penultimate track, What If…? continues with the edgy guitars and cascades into a spiraling and muscular punk track setting up the last song, Lonesome Death with it’s UK82 vibe and that wraps an excellent album.
