ALL THEM WITCHES – ‘ATW’ Album Review

ALL THEM WITCHES – ATW

All Them WitchesAll Them Witches are a band from Nashville, Tennessee who play a thunderous mix of hard rock, dark neo-blues, and heady psychedelia. ATW is their fifth full-length LP and was released a couple of weeks ago. The band have announced a lengthy US headlining tour this October and November with details below.

ATW opens with the six-minute Fishbelly 86 Onions and it is a “cosmic boogie” full of fuzz guitars, garage blues vocals and sporadic organ all crafting a punk rock version of the Doors if that can be imagined! The eight-track album continues with Workhorse and the mood is completely changed to a folky, bluesy, Americana style ballad.

The tracks are lengthy with 1st Vs. 2nd clocking in at over six minutes and this one is a raunchy garage rocker with elements of the 13th Floor Elevators whilst Half Tongue explores a more relaxed blues laden song replete with strong vocal and guitar solo(s). All Them Witches are accomplished songwriters and musicians with a knack for crafting a unique sound as they do on the excellent Diamond with its foreboding atmosphere supported by restrained deep voiced vocals, percussive guitars and distant organ that eventually let loose into some heavy riffs that Black Sabbath would have enjoyed!

Harvest Feast is a full ten minutes and forty-five seconds long and is dominated by a Clapton like blues lick and slow-paced drum beat that continues for most of the track until the last two minutes of a feedback drenched ending and the penultimate track, HTJC enters slowly in a shoegaze style feedback before a bass guitar plucks slowly and the vocals are full of angst and longing in a song that builds and builds to a slow, powerful beat and wall of noise conclusion.

The album closes with Rob’s Dream and is another lengthy, seven-minute plus song that starts with some ambient keyboards, laid back vocals and slow beat that explodes in a blues frenzy towards the end to produce a head banging riot here in the offices!!! It’s not punk, not blues, not garage, not swamp, it’s all of the above!!!
