C.O.F.F.I.N – ‘Piss-Up’ Album Review

C.O.F.F.I.N – Piss-Up

CoffinChildren Of Finland Fighting In Norway (C.O.F.F.I.N) are a four-piece band hailing from Sydney, Australia. Their third studio album, Piss-Up was released last month and will see the band take to the road in Australia and, later this year, the USA to promote the release.

The twelve track album opens with White Dog where bird sounds and a didgeridoo set up a heavy and ominous opening with power riffs and thudding beats joining the party before the song explodes into a heavy as hell punk rocker with angry vocals, group chanted chorus and an overall package that is awesome in sonic scope reminding me of Amebix.

The seventy-nine seconds of Nails is sheer aggression delivered with precision and power with Pissed maintaining the power and upping the skate-punk pace in segments as the band manage to blend Black Sabbath, The Business, Fugazi and Rudimentary Peni into one compelling package! On Between The Flags (Featuring Dave Warner) the five-minute plus song features a pulsating bass guitar, melodramatic slide guitars and a folk ballad approach replete with a spaghetti western vibe – loved it!

With Own Me C.O.F.F.I.N showcase another side to their personalities with a hardcore pounder of a track with the cowbell adding a unique touch and the bass licks prevalent and on Done By The Dogs the pace is manic and the delivery astoundingly fast and powerful…phew!

The longer Furnace features a Rudimentary Peni like riff and adds some dissonance to create a rather menacing and distinctly heavy atmosphere whereas King Luke is a full on Sabbath-esque head banger that careens into guitar solo driven pacey punk rock territory. The penultimate song, Related Violence is muscular, energetic and simply epic punk rock energy played tight and aggressive…brilliant track!

This super album closes with the four-minute plus, Princess Highway where the band deliver on their “psychotic skate-punk” self description with a bit of garage, a lot of bass and a pulsating beat replete with motorcycle engine revs!!! This is one excellent album!!
