CALIFORNIA HEARSE – ‘California Hearse’ Review

CALIFORNIA HEARSE – California Hearse

California HearseLA’s California Hearse (a new music project from the rhythm section of Gentlemen Prefer Blood) are a pop-punk band who have released an EP focused on depression and death…and surfing!

California Hearse’s first show as full band will be in San Diego this spring at La Escalera Fest and their eponymously titled debut EP was released last month. The six-track package opens with the bouncy and bopping, Welcome Home with echoes of early Elvis Costello and The Attractions mixing with The Plimsouls to produce a perfect package of hooks, serrated riffs, fast pace and dripping with melody!

On Used To Be the band craft a slightly less “happy” vibe as the vocals mourn the loss of a partner, the guitars scratch behind and then the drum roll drives home a super catchy chorus with a soaring background lick and pounding drums before Best Worst ups the pace with a 103 second roller coaster ride through multiple lyrics sung over 250mph backing…phew!

The lengthier Dissection is set to a dominant guitar lick, bass drum and rumbling bass guitar as the vocals sound more Airborne Toxic Event and the music builds to anthemic qualities – the lyrics and vocals just entice you in and the music is, well, just perfect – this is one fantastic song folks…one of my favourites of the past few months with excellent lyrics as well

The penultimate song, Half To Death returns to a pacier delivery albeit replete with great melody and monster hooks and some big riffs competing with up-front drums in a race to the finish before No Seoul closes the deal with a plaintive ballad that explodes half way through to a huge crescendo and supports the authentic, heartfelt lyrics. This may not be straight up ‘punk rock’ but, who cares? It’s excellent!!!
