FOR I AM – ‘All About Perspectives’ Album Review

FOR I AM – All About Perspectives

for-i-amRemember For I Am? Yes, this female-fronted pop-punk band out of Belgium is still around. They briefly considered calling it a day following the release of their debut EP, “15 Minutes Late”, so they could plan a profitable reunion further down the line. In the end they figured it wasn’t worth the hassle. Plus the band didn’t want to disappoint their fans. All seven of them. I’m kidding of course. These Belgian dudes and one dudette are doing a great job. And have at least eight fans.

Along the way they sold over 600 copies of “15 Minutes Late”, which is about 592 more than they were hoping for. Encouraged by this, they went back to the studio and recorded “All About Perspectives”, their very first full-length.

From the opening Simpleton For President where mock radio announces the election of an idiot to President, For I Am present a terrific punk rock song with amazingly strong female vocals reminiscent of Paramore but much more aggressive. With pounding bass, fast paced guitar licks and the shouted song title, I’m instantly in love.

The entire album is full of melody and hooks married with power and aggression and the songs are well crafted and well written such as Nightburn where a superb drum and bass interlude just add more to the powerfulness of the track. Or Was It Steve has an almost Subhumans style introduction and moves into a skate punk style song with those superb female vocals adding depth to the song.

It’s You begins with a weird organ sound under a chunky guitar riff and moves into melody infected chorus that had an Avril Lavigne (early days) sound and delivery and I loved it! The twelve track album is full of great songs with a clarity of vocals and production that is well on display with the rabble rousing, Wayward as well as the melodic and poppy An Unusual Kind Of Magic.

The excellent and catchy Linda is one of the true stand out tracks that marries The Undertones with Bad Religion and produces a stunning track that shows For I Am at their very best…and they’re damn good!

Laundry Man is much more full on punk rock and just blew my head off…For I Am have a variety that is enticing and addicting…this one just rocked for just over a minute! The band maintain the pace with Home For Summer that is slightly more punk rock than pop-punk with an edge and a tightness that shows how hard the band have worked on the road.

With Sticky Sweet the band try out a poppier sound and those female vocals cannot help but take the listener down the previously mentioned Avril Lavigne aural path and that leads us the closer, (Make It Out) Alive, where For I Am produce a happier and rocking ending to an absolutely barnstormer of an album…well worth your time and money.

All About Perspectives” was released on 17th March 2017 on CD, Vinyl and Digital through Disconnect Disconnect Records (UK), Bearded Punk Records (BE), Trilob Records (NL) and Infected records (PT). The band have numerous shows lined up for the Benelux region, and a full UK tour to be announced.
