FREIGANG – ‘Politics!’ Album Review

FREIGANG – Politics!

FreigangVienna, Austria’s superb punk band, Freigang have just released their new album; Fuck That Shit – Politics! Since reforming in 2011, the band has released some strong music including their excellent last album, People’s Will reviewed here: https://punkonline.co.uk/freigang-peoples-will-review/

Opening with the Dead Kennedys meet The Damned Almost A Man provides a runaway guitar lick with some tasty solo work and adds in some melodic and urgent vocals helped by the group chanted backing vocals. Next up is Get Some which channels Motorhead and The Business as the driving, fast-paced punk track has a raucous approach with some terrace chant Oi! style vocals.

On Income Inequality a head-banging beat meets some punky-bluesy guitar work and then an aggressive chorus ignites the touch paper before the powerful Kim Jong Un enters with a spiralling bass guitar, pounding 250mph drums and a ripping riff with angry, aggressive vocals with a group chanted “Un!” peppering the chorus as the band manage to emulate Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine.

The title track, Politics has a UK82 runaway riff with a multi-rhythmic approach, sheer punk rock power and some stellar musicianship and Gun Control develops into a superb Stiff Little Fingers like track that we loved here at the office with its catchy riffs and licks and great message!

Last Generation opens with a dirty, rumbling bass guitar and then literally explodes into a fast-paced verse/chunky, slower chorus effort that reminded me of early Abrasive Wheels! The eleven-track album continues with Free For All and I am again reminded of Motorhead with rumbling bass, excellent guitars and guttural vocals with a strong chugging middle eight before Pondererfeatures a heavier, slower bass lick, churning riffs and spoken/sung lyrics with deep melody and menace!

The penultimate track,Sovereign World is a solid Oi/punk/streetpunk effort with hints of the first wave of punk such as Chelsea and The Clash and the album closes with the bluesy rock ‘n’ roll of Ukraine.

This is a super punk rock effort and well worth adding to your wish list.
