GANG OF FOUR – ‘Complicit’ EP Review

GANG OF FOUR – Complicit

Gang of FourComplicit is seminal post-punk Gang of Four’s first new material in three years, coming ahead of a new album in Summer 2018. The EP draws together singles Lucky and Ivanka (Things You Can’t Have) with provocative artwork capturing Trump’s daughter alongside the Russian word for ‘complicit’ – brilliant!

The upbeat brass led intro to the danceable Lucky leads to a song with hints of the Human League, Joy Division and Primal Scream. The entire EP is superbly produced adding an urgency and polish to the excellent songwriting.

On Ivanka (Things You Can’t Have) a slower beat is mingled with eclectic electronics before the track ventures into Pink Floyd territory with some overlay of 1990’s dance/punk/ rave band, The Shamen.

The third track of the four is I’m A Liar reminded me very much of Depeche Mode with its heavy electronics, strong melodies and deep bass grooves. The EP concludes with a remix of Lucky entitled Lucky – 10 O’Clock Chemical Remix and the song gets the full dancefloor treatment with a house sounding keyboard, booming bass and pounding beats.
The Gang Of Four sound as current as any band out there and have grown tremendously since their early days – this is a strong return that you can stream here: https://spoti.fi/2HiKXQI
