Julie & The Wrong Guys, the collaborative project featuring Julie Doiron, Eamon McGrath and members of Cancer Bats, released their self-titled debut LP earlier this year on Dine Alone. No stranger to collaboration, Doiron’s career has seen her work with the likes of Chad VanGaalen, Phil Elverum (a.k.a. Mount Eerie), Gord Downie, The Wooden Stars, Shotgun and Jaybird, and The Tragically Hip, to great acclaim. This new project has been no exception, receiving praise from the likes of NPR, CBC, Stereogum, Exclaim and Noisey for its unconventional blend of Doiron’s tender and lyrically evocative songwriting with the pummeling volume of her bandmates.

Today the band are premiering the video for a track from the album entitled “Farther From You,” in advance of a run of December tour dates. The video was shot by Jim Agapito with the intention, according to the director, of resembling “a video shot in your parent’s basement, on the family’s Betamax VHS Camera which had the family vacation video in it that you just accidentally recorded over.” It provides an eerie accompaniment to a track that established the band’s collaborative writing process, a process that fittingly began at bassist Mike Peters’ lakeside vacation home.

“This was the song that got us into the collaborative writing spirit, working together as a band instead of four musicians and songwriters,” he continues. “We wrote the album at a cottage next to a lake in October, so as we sat around the kitchen table working on the lyrics together the lake imagery served as the perfect metaphor for the ideas that Julie wanted to tackle in this song. Ideas of working to move into a new phase of life, and the uncertainty that comes with that.”

Julie & The Wrong Guys self-titled debut LP is out now on Dine Alone.
