LIINES– ‘Stop – Start’ Album Review

LIINES– Stop – Start

LiinesLIINES released their debut album Stop – Start on 4 May via Reckless Yes Records. The Manchester trio are a prominent band in the post-punk/new-wave scene, with comparisons ranging from Savages to PINS to Desperate Journalist. Their sound is an infectious, urgent and at times furious blend of Riot Grrrl, post-punk and alt-rock sounds which take in elements of their collective influences.

The excellent female vocals that drive the opening track, Shallow onwards are laid on top of a driving beat, booming bass guitar and fuzzed guitar lick that bring to mind Joy Division, Wire, Magazine and even the Buzzcocks as well as the Breeders. The entire office sits up and takes notice as the opening chords of Never There set feet tapping and heads nodding and, oh that bass guitar, throbbing and precise bringing an Elastica vibe to the track.

Be Here is another take on the formula of big bass guitar, angular guitars, big drum beat and big female lead vocal reminding me of The Pixies at their best whereas Find Something is much more foreboding in sound and much more Joy Division in approach.

LIINES deliver a more atmospheric, slower approach on Cold where the superb clockwork drumming is a standout feature of the song and Blackout shows the faster side of the band with an urgent sound and sharp edges meeting punchy beats. On Disappear the drums (bloody good drums) meet that prominent bass and strong lead vocal before the guitar finally enter with ascending chords creating a feeling of take-off.

Hold Your Breath features a strong vocal over the, by now, well established rhythm section and is followed by the penultimate song, Never Wanted This where the pounding drums support an atmospheric pop-punk song. The album closes with an even dirtier bass guitar sound on Nothing. The track builds to a crescendo with the vocals taking us home. Good stuff, great debut and an album that builds on the post-punk genius of bands like Wire and Magazine as well as the Pixies to create a fresh 2018 approach.
