NO FUN AT ALL – ‘Grit’ Album Review

NO FUN AT ALL – Grit

Swedish punk rock legends, No Fun At All are back and have announced their new 12-track album, Grit, that will be released on April 13th 2018 through Bird Attack Records.

No Fun At All formed in 1991 and quickly became one of the torchbearers of European punk rock. Following the release of 1994’s No Straight Angels, the band found themselves headlining stages all over the world. Through until 2001, they continued to tour all over the world in support of 1995’s Out Of Bounds, 1997’s The Big Knockover and 2000’s State Of Flow records, before calling it a day.

After a show offer in the Spring of 2004, the band found that enjoyment and love again for playing live.  Grit is the output of their new found enthusiasm opening with the fast paced and powerful, melodic punk rock in the vein of Bad Religion with Spirit. The running bass and machine gun drum roll propels the brilliant No Fun Intended into 150mph punk rock heaven whilst Runner’s High is a more mid-paced, churning song that may be a first song about running I’ve heard!

The Humdrum Way quickly goes through the gears again and the vocals are as close to Greg Graffin that I have heard in a while. No Fun At All are melodic, powerful and fast with Forth displaying all of those qualities and Fortunate Smile adding some soaring choruses to the approach.

The tight playing on Suitable Victim is a hallmark of the band and Sucker (For A Plan) adds some excellent guitar work all the while maintaining a powerful baseline. The album is relentless in pace and Simple motors along at speed whereas A Wonderful Affair puts the pedal to the metal and adds a bit more…wow!

The penultimate track, Lonely Stranger opens with an engaging guitar lick, moves into chunky power chords and a monster chorus – this is a monster track on a big album. The closing song, You’re In Control displays some serious shredding on the guitar as the band deliver a fitting finale to a strong album. This is good stuff and, if you love the aforementioned, Bad Religion, this is a must have album!
