reptilians-from-andromedaIn the past few days we have received music from Riga-Latvia, New York, Hungary and this release from Istanbul, Turkey. Reptilians From Andromeda were formed in 2013 but harken back to punk roots for over 20 years. They have been compared to The Ravonettes and the female vocals dripping with echo certainly give a nod to the band but they have a more urgent, garage style sound.

The band themselves use words such as “avant garde” “art rock” and “post Punk” to describe their sound and all are relevant. The opening track of the new EP Sonic Rabbit Hole is Psychic Girl which brought me back to early Siouxsie and the Banshees. The band have seemingly perfected a lo-fi sound that is both in your face and far away at the same time.

The second track, Jungle marries some tribal drumming with some swirling guitars, urgent vocals and some weird samples that I think included a cat meow, elephant calls, dog barking and some bird calls. It works really well and is very clever in both delivery and production.

Third of five songs on the EP is We Are Who We Are and this is where the band live up to their self-proclaimed art-rock sound. Guitar feedback is mingled with anguished vocals, white noise and held together with some background drums. Once again, it works well – it’s different and that is more than likely attributable to the use of vintage drum machines, vintage microphones, old tape recorders and analog guitar pedals. It all blends to create a familiar noise but one that is unique at the same time.

Wicky Wacky Witches is downright strange as the title suggests but I loved it…very goth and great fun. The final track is Like The River To The Sea, a more powerful bass driven song that has a Sisters of Mercy vibe with the aforementioned Siouxsie undertone. Reptilians From Andromeda are different and all the more enjoyable for it…I really enjoyed this EP.

Reptilians From Andromeda have released 4 EPs and an album from independent US labels with “Sonic Rabbit Hole” available from Small Bear Records (UK). Listen to it here https://reptiliansfromandromedasmallbear.bandcamp.com/album/sonic-rabbit-hole.
