THE BITTEN – Is It Supposed To Sound Like That?

the-bittenHailing from Wolverhampton, The Bitten have unleashed their new album Is It Supposed To Sound Like That? (Just love that title!). The opening track, Thumbscrews, is a romping, rollicking, rock and rolling psychobilly tinged superstar of a song…demands movement and you can see why this band is picking up a lot of positive noise for their live shows!

Rules Of The Game is up next on this twelve track album and it picks up where Thumbscrews left off with an extended guitar driven introduction leading to a punk rocker reminiscent of the UK Subs, Chelsea and 999. The band has a certain working-class ambiance as exhibited on the Oi! style chant of Tattoos And Bruises and the follow up Drinking To Remember where a dirty guitar riff is joined by some restrained drums and a plaintive vocal that periodically launches into a rabble rousing chorus before returning back to the restrained versus!

By now, I’m really loving The Bitten and Anywhere Better Than This seals the deal with a wailing guitar intro that sets up a raunchy belter of a blue-collar punk/Oi! thriller. At the half-way point, the band showcase some more of that psychobilly DNA with Mile After Mile.

Jimmy Rocks is a pounding fist in the air crowd pleaser whilst (Almost) Perfect Husband turns up the heat with a faster punk rock effort. On Snakes And Ladders the hooks keep on delivering knock-out punches and the guitar just howls before the chunky beat takes hold. Elvis has a tad of Cock Sparrer in approach and leads into the penultimate song, The Man Comes Around a track that I thought was a stand out and it’s in good company! The melody and hooks just work so well with those gravel-throat vocals!

Ending this excellent package with Call Of The Wolves with it’s SLF style intro and all out punk rock approach, The Bitten have recorded a super album that is fresh, accessible, powerful and just a little bit different. It’s a must add to your punk rock collection.
