THE GREAT FALL – ‘Define’ E.P. Review

the_great_fallThe Great Fall from Raleigh NC describe their sound as alternative rock/post hardcore and their debut E.P. Define lives up to that billing.

Opening with the title track, Define that has that Against Me!/Rise Against/My Chemical Romance sound that is accessible and complex at the same time with changes of pace, melodic vocals and a drum propelled thudding song that burrows into your skull.

Lost Myself continues with the intricate layering of sounds to produce a powerful tune that reminded me a little of Husker Du and then the four minute Broken Ones begins with a mellow guitar before the drums and guitar launch into a powerful approach. The track is a standout on the five song E.P. that was released late last year and is well produced throughout.

There is almost a metal flavor to The Great Fall and with songs like Asylum they flirt with a grindcore pace and sound, even more powerful for it as well.

The final track on the debut E.P., Hopeless veers further into the slow but powerful territory and then adds some melodic vocals, chanted backing vocals and that math-punk complexity. The Great Fall have produced a very refreshing E.P.
