THE MISTAKES – ‘Democracy is a Dirty Word’

The Mistakes

South coast punk band The Mistakes have released their brand new video ‘Democracy is a Dirty Word’ just in time for the UK General Election. It is taken from the bands upcoming album, ‘Anti-social Media’.

The Mistakes are currently represented by Never Be Quiet Records, a new indie label founded and managed by Shane Creech, the guitarist of the band.
The label’s aim is to take the South Coast’s best punk and rock bands and put them in a position where the bands can gig swap and support each other and provide a way for all the bands to tour together and give as much as we can to the scene. With plans to promote nationally in the future too, it’s this as much as anything else which we believe displays the tireless work and true DIY ethic that is the hallmark of all great punk rock and roll acts.

Editors note: We at Punk Online hail this song and video as “about bloody time”. As people who grew up through Thatcher’s Britain we have long been asking “where are all the punk bands with a political message”? The Mistakes have at least taken on the shambolic state of the world head first with this new track and we hope it’s just the first of many more to come from the new punk bands of today.

“Democracy is a dirty word”

The Mistakes talk about this latest release….

“It’s not a typical punk, left wing statement.

It’s not a rallying cry for the voice of the people to be heard.

It’s especially not a ringing endorsement of our current situation…

It seems to us that recently the general populace haven’t got the best track record when it comes to making decisions, honorable exception for France not withstanding. After a couple of referendum or electoral results that shocked the world and sent us in a very particular, very worrying direction, we felt it was a damn good time to make our voices heard, and to strike a match for the many among us who are now supposed to just ‘deal with it.’

As another hugely significant election rolls around, it’s all the more important that we look what we have sown, hopefully before we have to reap it. In many ways, we are still going to be fighting a losing battle and we wanted to at least, at the very least, have a fitting battle cry.

The song runs through the state of public service to the inescapable comparisons with the Iron Lady herself, to a look at who comes out on top at times like this and what sort of response they should expect from an increasingly marginalised and maligned opposition. Nobody ever changes anything with a song, but we want it known that this time we are the enemy within, we are the disaffected, the appalled, the popular vote winners, the 48%, the lost but not the broken.

Democracy is a dirty word, but we are The Mistakes and the very least we can do is make sure as many people as possible know it.”
