THE PENSKE FILE – ‘Salvation’ Album Review

The Penske FileFor many years, The Penske House, in Burlington, ON was known as the place to go for the after-show party. It is a place where several dodgy music videos have been filmed and where countless bands have slept. More importantly, it’s where these three young men became The Penske File.

Salvation is due out on April 6h on Stomp Records and the band are about to embark on a huge tour (see dates below). The opening track, Kamikaze Kids is one monster of a song with hints of Gaslight Anthem, Springsteen and Frank Turner. The band manage to produce a wall of sound dripping in hooks and melody – ripe and ready to blow the cobwebs away!

On Golden Futures, the plaintive vocals and acoustic guitars set up a rabble-rousing, punch the air chorus with hints of Americana/folk rock whereas Lakeshore motors along with pounding drums and a ‘wind down those car windows’ and sing-along vibe. There is a feel-good atmosphere to The Penske File and a sense of fun as displayed on Spin My History, a huge song in scope and sound. Fairgrounds, continues the pace and rocks along and it is followed by the ballad style, American Basements replete with harmonica.

The band rock things up again with the raucous, Last Chance with Come What May, a folky rocker that, again, reminded me a little of Frank Turner. On Yesterday’s Getaway, the story of a road trip is backed by a country/punk sound with the harmonica again prominent. The penultimate song, Young & Worthless and the closer, Blessed Unrest are both driven by some excellent drums, big vocals and Springsteen style working class American rock music.
