THE RAGING NATHANS – ‘Cheap Fame’ Album Review

The Raging NathansThe Raging Nathans, are punk rock collective out of Dayton, Ohio, featuring members of The Queers, The Dopamines and The Slow Death. They will release their second album Cheap Fame through UK label, Plasterer Records this month. In support, the band will take to the road this April with UK Punks, Wonk Unit, before returning to Europe again this Summer.

Cheap Fame features thirteen tracks of melodic, up-beat punk rock, reminiscent of mid-90s Green Day  and the album artwork for was crafted by legendary collage artist Winston Smith. Smith is renowned for his work for punk rock legends Dead Kennedys and collaborations with Jello Biafra, as well as designing the cover artwork for Green Day’s Insomniac album in 1995.

The opener, Dayton is full of pace, power, hooks and melody and is a song that Billy Joe himself would be proud of. Teenage Amnesia is a superb pop-punk track with great vocals supported by chunky chords and one helluva bass/drum section. The Gold Rush is a straightforward, in your face, punk rocker whilst Bartending The Funeral is dominated by a soaring guitar lick and serious pace throughout!

B1505 is a little more punk than pop in sound with a rollicking chorus whereas Horsefly brings back those memories of early Green Day with a booming bass guitar, monster riffs and tight drumming throughout.

The songs are fast, furious and most hover around two to three minutes in length such as the headbanging Brain Is Floating and catchy Sucker Punch. On Circling The Drain, The Raging Nathans channel some Husker Du and add some Bad Religion overtones to produce a super punk rock song. On Florida Days, the momentum and pace is maintained as it is on Good For You as the band deliver punch after punch of melodic, fast-paced punk rock.

The superbly titled CTRL+ALTRIGHT+DEL is the penultimate song and is a little more aggressive as the band lament former acquaintances not being a friend anymore. Closing with Holding It In the band take us out as they brought us in. Power, pace, hooks and melodies drip out of the speakers and bring the album to an excellent ending. This is good stuff.
