THE SPOOK SCHOOL – ‘Could It Be Different?’ Album Review

THE SPOOK SCHOOL – Could It Be Different?

The Spook SchoolGlasgow indie-pop quartet The Spook School, will release their eagerly anticipated third album Could It Be Different? on 26th January 2017.

To celebrate the news, the band have revealed a video for brand new track ‘Still Alive’ which you can watch below. This track opens the album superbly and juxtaposes a dark lyric focused on an abusive relationship with a jaunty, melodic and edgy music. The Spook School remind me of Welsh band Los Campesinos! With pop melodies, male/female vocals and punky energy.

The personal storytelling continues on Best Of Intentions where the band again manages to add some irony, joy and sense of humor to the package with some fuzzy guitar accompaniment. Less Than Perfect brings the female vocals to the fore ably supported by a rolling bass guitar and serrated guitars. There is a touch of Lily Allen about the delivery as well as fellow Scots, Belle And Sebastian.

On Keep In Touch, is a longing love song full of angst set on top of a bouncy musical backing with melodic female backing vocals. The fifth of the eleven tracks, Bad Year was written the day after the ridiculous and dreadful Brexit vote and the track builds into some shoe-gaze guitar works with an indie-pop edge throughout.

The Spook School manage to mine a rich vein of indie-pop jauntiness throughout the album with the melodic mid-paced Alright producing positive vibes and Only Dance When I Want To channeling the aforementioned Los Campesinos! with a super catchy chorus.

The edgier I Hope She Loves You is a little sparser with a monster hook chorus backed by some chunky guitar riffs. The band return to the bouncy beat on While You Were Sleeping a song full of hooks and melody. The penultimate track, Body, is driven by a slightly atonal guitar lick, group vocals and a danceable beat that meanders back and forth with laid back sections with dark lyrics meeting the upbeat periods!

The album concludes with a ballad with super lyrics. High School is a fitting closer to a strong indie/pop album that is a very enjoyable listen indeed!
