THE STRAYS – ‘Live and Unwell’ Album Review

THE STRAYS – Live and Unwell

The StraysLet’s get something out right up front; we love The Strays here at Their recently released live album was recorded in Glossop, Derbyshire back on the 3rd February 2018 during the Never Tweet Your Heroes tour and features all the best known tracks from current E.Ps ‘Explicit Content’ and ‘Never Tweet Your Heroes’ and the ‘Richard Dreyfuss’ single.

The album is available from German Shepherd Records (see link below) and all major digital outlets. The band create a more urgent and raw sound live with the dirty guitars of Don’t Mither Me driven forward by the drum machine and electronic vocal effects to great effect and the excellent Gone In The Head takes up the energy a level or two with a pummeling rhythmic attack throughout.

The twelve-track album continues with Pay Per View and with all proceeds from sales of the release going to famine relief in South Sudan, your payment will go to a great cause and this angular song combining the Sleaford Mods with the Dead Kennedys is worth the price on its own! The popular single, Richard Dreyfuss is up next with a rugged riff and Art Brut style vocals with Johnny Mnemonic exploding with sheer punk rock energy. The crowd applause is constant and polite whereas the music is increasingly aggressive and challenging with TV Dinner rocking along and the urge to “dance and get out of your streets” sets up the funky Milk & Honey.

Death In The Viper Room opens with some banter, musak keyboards and a funkadelic guitar as the band lay down a track rooted deep in 1970’s soul-funk ambience whilst No Solution shows the hardcore personality and sound that just blows away all the cobwebs!

On Problematic a chunky guitar riff and pounding beat are sure to get your feet tapping and head nodding with some cowbells adding to the rhythm. The penultimate track Don’t Get Sick opens with some more crowd, band banter and maintains the bands high energy tempo before the set concludes with the brilliant Wind Your Neck In with its Sleaford Mods vocal/lyric approach and raucous guitar/drum combination.
