WONK UNIT – ‘Terror’ Album Review

WONK UNIT – Terror

Wonk UnitSpearheaded by songwriter Alex Johnson, Wonk Unit formed in 2006. The band have built a reputation on the underground circuit as one of the most entertaining and successful DIY bands, with a relentless touring, recording and release schedule over the years.

Inspired by the mundane, frontman Alex Johnson, who speaks openly about his road to sobriety, is a recovering drug addict and alcoholic. Wonk Unit is Johnson’s release. Love, lust and extreme beauty.

Not letting up, the band head in to the spring of 2018 with their 6th studio album, Terror and a relentless schedule of touring throughout the UK and mainland Europe. Full tour dates below.

Staying true to their DIY roots, Terror will be released through Johnson’s own Plasterer Records. 2018 will be another busy year for the DIY label, with releases from Pizzatramp and The Raging Nathans in the pipeline.

Terror will be available on CD, Vinyl and all online platforms from the 20th April 2018. This truly superb effort opens with the pounding Day Job Wanker with rowdy vocals and powerful guitars supporting some funny lyrics. Next up is the heart wrenching Christmas In A Crack House where the band remind me of The Kinks as they tell a story over a poppy rhythm – but this is a personal story that will tug at your heartstrings…stunning!

Flummoxed More Than Jealous moves along with a stuttering rhythm, plaintive piano and a melody that acknowledges the Beatles and Slade. Wonk Unit are terrific songwriters and at the top of their game on this album as shown on Ride It Out. The track bounds along with a strong bass and rhythm with massive guitar driven choruses…it’s clever and engaging with a little synth to add a lightness! Thank You has little Frank Turner and a lot of reggae whilst Hope sees the ‘Sarf Landan’ accent prominent over some lyrics that Squeeze really wanted to write…Weezer in style and pace, the song is an instant classic!!!

The electronic voice that starts As The rest Of The World Sleeps is replaced with a punk rock track full of mosh pit inducing power whereas My New Safe Place mingles Alvin Stardust with the Kinks to produce a thoroughly British ballad/anthem full of hooks and melody. Judas Betrayers is a Green Day like rollicking rocker whilst Faith maintains the momentum but features a guitar lick and piano as the drivers.

The penultimate song, She Knows It sees Wonk Unit lay down a Husker Du style layer upon layer of noise supporting a Jilted John vocal. The album ends with a punk version of Christmas In A Crack House and renames it Me And Curtis and it works so well.

For me, album of the year so far!
